Route: Barley → Pendle Hill → Downham → Barley
Distance: 9 miles
Weather: Breezy but bright – classic autumn walking weather
Leader: Janet H
After a week of gloomy forecasts and drizzle, Sunday morning delivered a welcome surprise — crisp air, golden leaves, and Pendle Hill standing proud under a patchwork of blue sky and cloud. Twenty-three walkers gathered in Barley car park, armed with flasks, poles, and plenty of good humour.
Janet led us off just after 10:00 am, taking the familiar lane towards the reservoir before the steady climb up Pendle began. A few of us were regretting that extra slice of toast by the halfway mark, but spirits remained high (and so did the wind!). The view from the summit was simply stunning — stretching across the Ribble Valley, with Ingleborough faintly visible on the horizon.
A short tea break at the top gave everyone a chance to catch their breath and swap biscuits (honourable mention to Dave’s homemade flapjacks, which vanished within minutes). We then descended the gentler side towards Downham, where the group enjoyed lunch beside the stream.
The return leg offered a quieter pace through woodland paths and open fields, with curious sheep and the odd muddy gate to negotiate. By 3:15 pm we were back in Barley — boots muddy, cheeks glowing, and ready for the real reward: tea and scones at the Cabin Café.

Another fine day out with great company and laughter all the way. Many thanks to Janet for a well-planned route and to everyone who made it such an enjoyable day.
Next walk: Sunday, 20th October – Gisburn Forest Circular (8 miles, moderate). Meet at Gisburn Hub car park at 9:45 am.
Don’t forget your waterproofs and a flask — it’s October, after all!g here...
